As science advanced the discovery of a chemical compound which was highly explosive called mercuric fulminate led to the next break through in firearm development. Percussion cap guns have a nipple connected to a tube in the firing chamber of the gun.
The percussion cap containing the mercuric fulminate is placed pushed onto the nipple, the hammer is cocked & when the trigger is pulled the hammer strikes the cap causing it to ignite which in turn ignites the main charge. This simple process speeded up the action of firing the gun & lessened the impact of rain. Due to the simplicity of the mechanism it was cost effective to convert flintlocks to take caps so sometimes this option was followed rather than purchasing a new weapon.
From this the cartridge was developed, this was a metal casing holding primer, gun powder & bullet which led to the type of firearms we have today.
